For this project, we wanted to try something a little different. Combining the classic look of horns with a raw, battle-damaged skull, this mask features four prominent horns and plenty of sculpted details to bring out during painting.

Whether you're making it for a Halloween party, adding it to your collection, or simply looking for your next creative project, this mask is a fun one to experiment with.

Once you've downloaded the STL file, it's time to get printing!

After your print is complete, remove any supports and sand down the surface to smooth out visible layer lines and imperfections. A well-prepared surface will make a big difference when applying your base coats and finer paint details.

Step-by-Step Airbrush Painting Tutorial

Now comes the fun part: bringing this battle-damaged Halloween mask to life!

For this build, we're using a combination of airbrushing and hand-painting techniques to create depth, realistic bone tones, weathered details and metallic accents.

Step 1: Building the Base and Defining Shadows

Start by connecting the Mobius TG 0.5mm Airbrush to the TurboX Pro Air Compressor.

  1. Apply a solid coat of Matte Black over the main face of the mask. This creates a dark foundation and establishes the deepest shadows.
  2. Spray Gloss Black over the four horns to give them a smooth, dark base for the metallic details later.
  3. Switch to Matte White and spray from above, allowing the paint to catch raised areas such as the cheekbones, forehead and other anatomical details.

This top-down highlighting technique helps bring out the sculpted features while keeping the recessed areas dark. It also gives us a strong foundation for the colour layers that follow.

Step 2: Adding Grime and Colour Variation

With the initial shading in place, it's time to give the mask a more aged and weathered appearance.

  1. Apply a brown wash over the mask, allowing it to settle into the recessed details and crevices.
  2. Gently wipe away the excess wash from raised surfaces to leave behind natural-looking grime and darker details.
  3. Switch to the Mobius Aventus 0.4mm Airbrush for more controlled colour application.
  4. Apply Clear Yellow, Clear Orange and Clear Red to selected raised areas to introduce subtle warm tones.
  5. Add Clear Blue and Clear Purple to deeper shadow areas for contrast and colour variation.

The transparent colours help create a richer, more layered appearance without completely covering the underlying black-and-white shading. This gives the mask more visual depth and makes the final bone effect much more interesting.

Step 3: Creating the Final Bone Effect

Now it's time to bring everything together.

Mix Matte White, Desert Sand and Flesh to create a natural-looking bone tone.

Apply a light, semi-transparent layer over the mask using your airbrush. Rather than completely covering the previous layers, build up the colour gradually.

This allows the warm and cool undertones beneath to subtly show through, creating a more realistic aged-bone appearance.

The result is a layered finish with natural variations in colour, rather than a flat, solid white surface.

Step 4: Painting the Horns and Final Assembly

The horns deserve some attention of their own. We'll give them a dark metallic finish to contrast with the aged bone surface.

  1. Before painting, use the Voortex Paint Shaker to thoroughly mix your paints and ensure the pigments are evenly distributed.
  2. Apply a Zirconium Black base coat to all four horns using a paintbrush.
  3. Once dry, lightly dry-brush Copper along the raised edges and details.
  4. Reattach the horns to the mask and check that everything is securely fitted.

The copper highlights catch the light against the dark base, creating a weathered metallic appearance that complements the raw bone finish.

And there you have it! A battle-damaged Halloween mask with plenty of character, texture and sinister details.
